Building Permits

Building permits are required for many building projects in the city. Fees vary based on the type and value of the project. A building permit application may be filled out online and submitted to the city in person, by email, or by fax.

Fixed fee permits:

Several items have a fixed permit fee of $75 plus a state surcharge of $1 for a total permit fee of $76:

  • Windows
  • Doors
  • Roofing
  • Siding

Fees must be paid in the form of a check payable to City of Shorewood or cash and the permit will not be issued until the fee is received by the city. A permit card to be posted at the job-site will be mailed to you or may be picked up in person at city hall.

Variable fee permits:

Several construction projects have a permit fee that is based on the total value of the project:

  • New construction
  • Additions
  • Remodel
  • Garage
  • Other construction
  • Basement
  • Porch
  • Deck
  • Demolition

Once the application is completed and the proper plans are reviewed by the planning department, the applicant is notified of the fee. Once the fee is received a permit card to be posted at the job-site will be mailed to you or may be picked up in person at city hall.

Zoning permit:

A zoning permit is required for some projects and requires a fixed permit fee of $20. The $20 will be due upon completion of permit review by the planning department and must be paid in person or by mail to city hall. The following items require a zoning permit:

  • Accessory Building
  • Fence or wall
  • portable storage unit
  • Temporary sign
  • Driveway
  • Irrigation system
  • Sport/tennis court
  • Tent or canopy

Inspections:

All building projects require an inspection. The city handles all construction, plumbing and mechanical inspections. Please call the city at 952.960.7900 at least 24-hours in advance to schedule an inspection.

Electrical inspections are handled through State Board of Electricity, 612.642.0800. Electrical permit forms can be obtained at city hall or online.
