Construction & Demolition Waste Reduction

The EPA estimates that 600 million tons of Construction & Demolition (C&D) waste was generated in the US in 2018. In Hennepin County, about 70% of materials from demolitions end up in landfills. However, about 85% of materials in a typical demolition project could be salvaged or recycled.

Hennepin County now offers grants of up to $5000 to property owners who use deconstruction techniques instead of mechanical demolition, carefully dismantling a building structure, typically by hand, to preserve building materials so they can be reused. If you're interested in reducing C&D waste on your next construction or demolition project, find out more about Hennepin County’s Deconstruction Grants, and check out Better Futures Minnesota, the deconstruction business that the county has partnered with.
